It's all about the process
I watched every episode of American Ninja Warrior this season. After the finale, in which no one finished the 3rd of 4 stages, I was annoyed. There was very little payoff for my investment of time. In addition, NBC had to build up one of the obstacles in the middle of stage 3, so they had at least something to narrate. Would anyone get over the "fingertip climb". Well, 23 out 24 failed before they got there, and one guy got through that, before falling off on the next obstacle.
I changed my mind after seeing a great article in the Washington Post, by Hank Steuver. Sometime's it's all about the progress you make towards a goal, and getting in the arena.

Josh. I know a few guys who tried out for that season. I actually loved the fact that this is an obstacle that three human beings have conquered and there is no guarantee that anyone else ever will.
Assaulting an impossible obstacle is heroic. No one made it this season. Someone may in the future but there is no guarantee.
True suspense!
